Jayme Stokes of Wilmington Health recently accomplished the inaugural SADI-S procedure in the region, as announced by the practice.
Stokes, a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon, executed a Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S).
According to Stokes, “SADI-S marks a substantial leap forward in bariatric surgery, providing patients with a holistic approach to long-term weight management.”
The procedure involves a single intestinal bypass instead of the traditional two, streamlining surgical procedures and reducing the risk of intestinal leakage.
“The two-step laparoscopic surgery commences with a significant portion of the stomach being removed, reshaping it into a narrow ‘sleeve’ structure,” the announcement clarified. “This sleeve curbs food intake and lowers the production of the hunger-inducing hormone ghrelin, aiding in appetite control.”
Officials noted that SADI-S was introduced in 2007 as an adaptation of the conventional duodenal switch operation, boasting improved outcomes and decreased postoperative complications.
“In contrast to the duodenal switch, SADI-S preserves a larger portion of the intestine, facilitating better nutrient absorption and minimizing the necessity for lifelong supplements,” the announcement added. “Furthermore, the single intestinal connection in SADI-S reduces the risk of leakage and future bowel obstructions, enhancing patient safety and ensuring long-term surgical success.”
Stokes emphasized that “SADI-S signifies a significant advancement in bariatric surgery, providing patients with a comprehensive approach to long-term weight management.”
