What Are the Differences Between Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Bypass vs Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve includes 70% – 85% reduction of the stomach of the patients. This allows patients to reach a feeling of fullness quickly with fewer portions, and the patient can lose weight by dieting more easily. Like a gastric bypass, a gastric sleeve requires the patient to be mindful of nutrition. The distinction between both is that, unlike Gastric Sleeve, Gastric Bypass also entails altering the patient’s small intestine. The technique of reducing the stomach is what makes gastric sleeve and gastric bypass similar. Due to this, individuals who undergo gastric sleeve surgery will just have a small stomach, whereas those who undergo gastric bypass surgery would have a smaller stomach and different digestion.

In the realm of bariatric surgery, different weight loss techniques like the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass are recommended. Patients must meet the exact requirements for either a gastric sleeve or a gastric bypass. Both surgeries include requirements to disallow persons with a lower BMI from receiving surgery because bariatric surgery is suitable for overweight people to lose weight. These criteria can be examined as:

  • The patient’s BMI should be at least 35.
  • The age range of the patients should be between 18-65.
  • For gastric bypass surgery, the patient’s BMI should be at least 40. At the same time, these patients must have serious health problems due to obesity. These diseases can be sleep apnea, Type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.

Patients who meet these requirements should consult with a doctor who specializes in bariatric surgery and be evaluated for surgical suitability.

Should I Choose Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass?

Each patient will receive a different response to this question. Patients should choose the treatment that is most appropriate for them, even when the BMI values of the patients meet the requirements for both treatments.

Although gastric sleeve procedures are suitable for patients with a BMI of 35 and above, gastric bypass is more suitable for those with a BMI of 40 and or above. Because gastric bypass changes digestion along with diet, patients do not digest the calories they take. As a result, calorie restriction increases, making it possible to lose weight more quickly and easily. With a gastric sleeve, only the patient’s stomach is reduced. Additionally, a gastric bypass modifies the patient’s small intestine’s size, position, and functionality.
